3 Ways to Thrive With a Disability

If you’re one of the many people in the U.S. who has a disability, life can feel lonely and frustrating. You may wonder why God chose you to have this challenge or if you have a decent future ahead. There are answers to these questions and plenty of ways to thrive with a disability.

Ask God for Help

You may never know why God let you have a disability. Be assured it isn’t a punishment on you or anyone else. Furthermore, God has plans for you with your disability—not in spite of it. Hold on to promises like:

Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you…plans to give you a hope and a future.”

2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is sufficient for you; My power is made perfect in weakness.”

Isaiah 54:4: “Do not be afraid; you will not suffer shame; do not fear disgrace, you will not be humiliated.”

Ask for What You Need

A big part of living with a disability is standing up for yourself. Make clear what modifications and help you need. If you can’t communicate verbally, you need and deserve assistance.

Focus on Your Strengths

Many people will spend their time telling you what you can’t do. It’s true that you’ll probably face more obstacles than most, but you have strengths that deserve to be nurtured. Spend time every day doing something you love. Share your accomplishments, and actively seek to contribute wherever you are and however you can.
