Women are busier than ever, juggling careers, family duties, and in the case of Christians, church responsibilities. Sometimes, after a long and difficult day or week, we need to come home and watch a movie—but what kind? If you’re looking for an uplifting chick flick to unwind with after work or share with your daughters or nieces, we’ve compiled a remarkable list.
- Ever After (PG-13). This 1998 Drew Barrymore film is a retelling of the Cinderella story. Here, Cinderella and her prince live in sixteenth-century France. Cinderella (Danielle in this story) is a reader, a passionate advocate for the downtrodden, and an accomplished swordswoman. The costumes and sets are beautiful, and pure romance abounds.
- Ice Princess (PG). Casey Carlyle is a physics and math whiz with a passion for ice skating. Challenged to come up with a “personal science project” to win a scholarship, she sets out to find the exact aerodynamic formula that makes the junior-level skaters at her school so successful. She discovers a true passion for the sport, which causes tension between her and her mom. This is resolved nicely, but the journey is refreshingly complex.
- My Big Fat Greek Wedding (PG). With a sequel premiering in March (2016), now might be a good time to dust off this 2002 classic. Toula has finally met the guy of her dreams in Ian Miller—but can she convince her big fat Greek family to embrace her non-Greek prince? Culture clashes and touching moments make for a humorous, heartwarming film.
- Raising Helen (PG-13). Helen is a glamorous New York City model who lives the corresponding lifestyle until her sister and brother-in-law’s death leaves her as the guardian of three children. Helen must adjust to a totally different life, which comes with its own challenges. These include a tender romance with Pastor Parker, the principal at the kids’ new Lutheran school.
