If you’re like most Americans, it has been extremely difficult for you to watch the news coverage of the devastation in Houston, Texas these past few days. Hurricane Harvey has rocked the gulf coast and is expected to continue to dump rain into the weekend in many areas of the US.
It’s painful to see pictures of truck drivers, women in their nursing home, children and pets stranded as the water rises and rises. However, as believers, we know that God is near to those who need him and cry out for him. And even though we will continue to pray for those affected by the flooding, we’re also called to be the hands and feet of Christ–to love our neighbors as ourselves and to be Jesus to them when they need him most.
If you’re near Houston and own a boat, it might be a good idea to contact local law enforcement or emergency services to offer your vehicle as rescue efforts continue. However, there are currently thousands of men, women, and children who are displaced and need basic care such as shelter, food, water, and medical attention even after they’ve been rescued.
How You Can Help The Most
If you’re not able to physically help the victims of Hurricane Harvey yourself, there’s good news: You can still help in a powerful and meaningful way.
Convoy of Hope is a faith-based nonprofit that mobilizes thousands of volunteers each year to help with situations like this. Right now they are partnering with local businesses, churches, and individuals in the Houston area to provide help where it is most needed. There are currently volunteers with Convoy of Hope giving supplies to Texans who are lined up and in need of help. To see some of the work they’re doing, click here.
Donating to Convoy of Hope is possibly one of the easiest, and yet most important, things you will do today. By donating, you will be blessing the lives of our neighbors in Texas with desperately needed supplies, food, and water. What’s more, by donating to Convoy of Hope you’ll be sharing with the important message that they are loved and valued by the Lord and a community of believers.
