Non-Traditional Christmas Meals

Every year thousands, maybe millions, of Americans have a traditional meal on Christmas evening that is if we’re being honest, very similar to the meal that is served on Thanksgiving with only a few changes. But did you know that it’s a growing trend to eat a non-traditional or “alternative” meal with family and friends on Christmas?

If you’re up to it, consider serving one of the following this year instead of your traditional fare:

Taco Bar

Set up a bar so that guests can serve themselves. Start with plates and tortillas (soft, crunchy, or both) at the beginning. Set out bowls of the following: seasoned ground beef, chicken strips, sauteed onions and peppers, shredded cheese, salsa, avocado slices, lime wedges, shredded lettuce, black olives, and anything else you like on your tacos.

Asian Food

Whether it’s takeout or something you make at home, there are a lot of options when it comes to Asian food. Consider purchasing ingredients for dishes like pad thai, General Tso’s, beef and broccoli, curry chicken, fried rice, or anything else!

Pizza Party

Start with a simple pizza dough recipe and set out all of the fixings for people to make their own pizzas. Set out bowls of different types of cheeses like mozzarella, feta, provolone, or parmesan cheese. Set out toppings like pepperoni, salami, sausage, sliced onions, artichoke hearts, spinach, Canadian bacon, peppers, mushrooms, pineapple, etc. You might even set out “recipe” cards for suggested group toppings like a “Greek Pizza” or a “Traditional Pepperoni.”

Breakfast for Dinner

Everybody loves breakfast food! Try serving anything from french toast to waffles or pancakes. Serve something salty like hash browns or grits. Try meats like bacon, sausage, or cooked ham. Want to serve eggs? Egg casserole is a great way to serve eggs to a crowd.
