Women have unique roles to play in regard to world missions. When most people think of women in the mission field, they think of pastors’ or missionaries’ wives. While this role opens women to mission opportunities, you don’t need to have one of them to impact the world. No matter your life situation, you can make an impact on a mission trip if you prepare well.
Pray
Every important endeavor should start with prayer – especially a mission trip. Mission trips involve going to a new place to share your faith, often with hurting or impoverished people. Their hearts may not be ready to hear you, and your heart may be fearful. Pray for courage and openness on both sides. Pray for the physical and spiritual needs of your team. Spend time reading about women in Scripture whose prayers received miraculous answers. Hannah, Deborah, and Mary are wonderful examples.
Use Women-Specific Resources
Many women are hesitant about missions, seeing it as a male-only endeavor. These days, there are many female-specific resource kits for women interested in missions. Purchase one or ask your church to invest in a curriculum for a group.
Call on Role Models
Throughout the centuries, women have been dynamic missions leaders in the U.S. and around the world. Study them, especially if you’re new to the mission field. Start with people like Amy Carmichael, an Irish missionary who shared the Gospel with millions in India. If you’re staying stateside, read up on women like Catherine Booth, wife of the Salvation Army’s founder.
