Discovering Your Purpose Later in Life

Culturally speaking, it would seem that Americans are expected to know what they want to do with their lives by the time they’re 18, study it for a few years, pursue a career in that field, and then retire happily, feeling they have fulfilled their purpose. However, that is just not realistic and is also not the way the majority of people experience life.

In fact, many people find that with different phases of life come new passions and, sometimes, a new sense of purpose. That is, actually, more commonly how people experience life. But what if you’re “over the hill” and you’re just now finding the first topic that you feel passionate about and feel called to? Here are a few things to consider and to help propel you forward:

Don’t Let Age Deter You From Your Purpose

There are numerous examples in the Bible of God waiting until much later in life to call his followers to his purposes. Often men and women feel discouraged because they think they’re too old to start something new. Look to Biblical examples of older people being uses to further God’s kingdom and be encouraged.

Embrace Your New Purpose

It doesn’t matter if it requires you to go back to school or to make a big change, if you feel God calling you to do something, you should heed his call. Whether you’ve been staying at home to care for your children or a relative, working the same job, or bouncing around from job to job for the last 30 years, chances are all of your prior experiences will help inform your new sense of purpose.
