Preparing for Allergy Season

Sniffling, sneezing, coughing, runny nose, watery eyes — they all sound like symptoms of a bad cold, but they’re also very common symptoms of bad allergies!

When the body senses a foreign invader, even though it may be harmless, it often attacks the invader, also known as an allergen, so hard that immune system ends up attacking itself! The body releases massive amounts of histamine in order to remove invaders (such as pet dander or pollen). This is what causes those severe symptoms!

Here’s what can be done:

Identify what Triggers Your Allergies

If you’re uncertain about what exactly is causing your allergies, you can get a simple test at your doctor’s office or at an allergist’s office. Common allergens are animals (such as dogs, cats, horses, etc.), dust, mold, and outdoor environment elements (such as specific trees, grasses, shrubs, flowers, etc.) Doctors recommend that the best way to prevent allergies is to avoid triggers.

Boost Your Immune System

Taking care of your body with common-sense practices may lessen the effects of allergy attacks. Be mindful of what your body needs: make sure to get plenty of rest, drink enough water, and ensure that you’re getting enough vitamins and minerals in your diet.

Talk to Your Doctor about Medication

Histamine blockers are often the most effective way to treat symptoms caused by allergies. Your doctor may suggest you try some over the counter nasal sprays or pills. If your allergies are more severe, you may have to look into prescription options.
