Every first Thursday in May, our nation celebrates the National Day of Prayer, a day to pause and take time to come before God in humility and pray, thanking Him for our blessings and asking Him to guide us in the future.
Though national days of meditation and fasting had occurred much earlier, its official establishment was in 1952 by Harry S. Truman, and since then each year we collectively turn our hearts and minds toward the Lord on this day.
Today we consider how fortunate we are to live in the United States and for our freedom to worship. We ask God to grant wisdom to our leaders and to ourselves as citizens, and we thank Him for providing for us thus far. Let us take this opportunity to humbly approach God with our prayers and petitions today but also remember His sacrifice for us on the cross and resurrection, which give us the greatest blessing of all.
